I agree dumbbells can be great for getting core work. Especially unilateral work such as suitcase deadlifts and unsupported one arm rows. And no doubt. . . diet is key. I stand by the claim that you can get a six pack without ANY direct ab work as long as you use free weight strength training movements and stick to a strict diet.

Hey Vic -

What has worked for me when I have "achieved" six pack abs is....

1) Clean up the diet (as you suggest)
2) Dumbbell lifting which requires core support
3) Seated A-Frame twists using 45 lb plate

Your suggested ab workouts definitely work when I have done in the past.

I am not a huge crunch basher of those that do them. The typical reason why people don't succeed at getting abs with crunches is because they are doing them wrong like most things that we all fail at in life.

Anyways....great sugg's on ab workout

Hey Vic:

Congrats on all your accomplishments and Godspeed with the move back home (Jefferson Co. is beautiful). I spent a decade in Ohio and am now back in my hometown in Tennessee. I don't know how long I will stay but it has really been a great way station. Keep blogging, and I am sure that your law practice will feel reinvigorated. And if home becomes too much, as a former infantry grunts we know you can always ruck up and go back out in the world. Hooah!

Take care and good luck.

Ha! Yes, Coda is the real brains of the operation. And getting in shape is definitely simple. But as I'm fond of saying, simple does not mean easy.

Watch out, it looks like Coda is making a move for your job. If he learns to type, you're all finished ;-)

Good stuff guys! It's nice to be reminded that getting into shape can be a simple process.

[...] As I recently said in my interview for the Hall of Warriors over at EnsoJourney.com, my dog Coda is an unending source of joy for me. I marvel at watching his unrestrained actions and emotions. If he’s hungry, he eats. If he’s tired, he sleeps. If he feels like cuddling on the couch, he curls up next to me. And if he’s mad because I won’t give him a snack, he lets me know that too. He never denies his true nature, even when that means expressing the killer inside.
